Suunto Customer Service and Ambit2 R Problems

Read below, or watch this video to see the problems I had with my JUNK Suunto Ambit2 R in less than 1 year of using it. I have now paid over $400 USD and learned my lesson.

I loved my Suunto Ambit2 R GPS runner’s watch for almost a year. Then it all sort of went to hell. The first thing to break was the heart rate monitor. I went to the watch store and tried some good batteries in it. Nope, completely dead. I threw it out. In hindsight, that wasn’t the best move because I didn’t know I was going to be griping to their customer service about some other breakage too. I might still have the band here, not sure. The plastic unit I’m sure I just threw out in the trash thinking I’d buy another one for $70 somewhere.

It’s easy to see that my MovesCount records are suddenly missing the heart rate data after the thing broke.

The next thing to break was the plastic band. Jeez. I figured, OK, no problem – I’ll get a band and Heart Rate Monitor for about $90 and take the loss. Despite my NEVER having abused either the HRM or the band. I treat all my electronics equipment very well – exceptionally well. I have Nikon cameras and MacBook Pro computer which have lasted for years. No problems at all. I expected that a watch and HRM I paid $300 for would last more than a year. Oh well, I get it… nothing lasts forever, but come on. Not even a year?

Then as I was inspecting my Suunto Ambit2 R glass face with my loupe – I see pitting in the glass!! No kidding… I was like “FUKC!” What is going on man?

I wrote Suunto Customer Service. They wrote back, “go to this page and find the service center for your country.”

Thailand was not listed at all. I couldn’t believe it.

But then Suunto customer service wrote back and gave me a place to send the watch. It is  a service center in Hong Kong. They said if my warranty didn’t cover it, they’d charge me for the costs. Hmm. That sucks because honestly, if they tell me it’s going to cost me money for the glass OR the watch band I’m going to tell them to KEEP THEM. I’ll buy a Fenix next.

So, that’s where we are today. I’ll pack the watch up and send it and see what happens.

I really hope they do the right thing and send me a new Ambit2 R or Ambit3 R without a bill. Let’s see if Suunto customer service treats the customer right.
